Old tradition 

In the sixth century, it was a common practice for warriors to drink water from a particular fountain called "Calamo's Fountain" (in Italian "Tredici Cannelle") before going to war. In this way they guaranteed their return home.   

Nel VI secolo, era una comune pratica per i soldati, bere acqua proveniente da una particolare fontana chiamata "Fontana del Calamo" (in italiano "Le Tredici Cannelle") prima di andare in guerra. In questo modo garantivano il loro ritorno a casa. 

Sea festival

Ancona sea festival is held on the first Sunday of September and consists of a procession of many boats setting sail to the open sea as religious ceremony. There are theatre productions, fashion shows, concerts and exhibitions. The day ends with a firework show.

La festa del mare in Ancona è tenuta la prima domenica di Settembre e consiste in una processione di molte navi che salpano in mare aperto come cerimonia religiosa. Ci sono produzioni teatrali, sfilate di moda, concerti ed esibizioni. La giornata termina con uno spettacolo di fuochi artificiali.

 

Religious festival (the coming)

The religious festival (the coming) starts in the evening on the 8 and 9 December by lighting bonfires in various parts of the city and in the countryside. In December 10th we celebrate the Madonna of Loreto.

La festa religiosa (la venuta) inizia nella sera tra l'8 e il 9 Dicembre con dei fuochi in varie parti della città e nelle campagne. Il 10 Dicembre noi celebriamo la Madonna di Loreto.

Carnival

Carnival is a festivity that is celebrated generally in Catholic countries. The celebrations often take place in public parades where the first element is the mask . The word carnival comes from Latin "carmen levare" (eliminate meat), as it indicated the banquet that was held on the last day of carnival (fat Tuesday), just before the period of abstinence and fasting of Lent.

Carnevale è una festività che è celebrata generalmente nelle città Cattoliche. La celebrazione si svolge spesso in pubbliche sfilate. La parola carnevale deriva dal latino "carmen levare" (eliminare la carne), come ad indicare il banchetto che si teneva il giorno prima di carnevale (Martedì grasso), appena prima il periodo di astinenza e digiuno della Quaresima.

May fair

The fair of San Ciriaco, or May fair, is held in the city since the fourteenth century, and lasts from 1st to 4th of May in honor of the patron saint. Every year many faithfuls go up to the Cathedral to honor the body of the early Christian martyr, exposed in the  crypt in  May. During these days the whole town is home to stalls of all kinds.

La fiera di San Ciriaco, o fiera di Maggio, si tiene nella città dal XIV secolo, e dura dal primo al 4 Maggio onore del santo patrono. Ogni anno molti credenti si recano alla Cattedrale per onorare in corpo del primo martire cristiano, esposto nella cripta a Maggio. Durante questi giorni tutta la città è casa di bancarelle di ogni genere.
